April D. McCoy is a bay area native; born, raised, and educated in Santa Clara County. As an attorney, April's primary focus is on family and protecting family interests. She is committed to providing compassionate and effective counsel to individuals going through the family law process. She works with her clients to understand each individual situation and collaborates with them to litigate within each client's means.
Prior to the formation of McCoy & Weiss, LLP, April worked as an associate attorney for two of the most prominent solo practitioners of family law in Santa Clara County, where she gained valuable litigation experience. As a complement to her litigation background, April has completed two intensive mediation trainings; Essentials of Mediation and Divorce Mediation with the Northern California Mediation Center, and Basic Mediation Course with the Santa Clara County Dispute Resolution Program. When possible, April believes that a mutually agreeable settlement can save both parties time, stress, and financial resources.
While in law school, April served as a Judicial and Clinical intern for the Santa Clara County Superior Court, Family Division. For the Judicial portion of this two-part internship, Ms. McCoy researched and wrote legal memoranda regarding substantive and procedural family law. For the Clinical portion, April interviewed and assisted self-represented litigants in the Family Law Facilitator’s Office. April also interned for the City of San Jose, City Attorney's Office, where she appeared as a Bar Certified Law Student in criminal court for the City of San Jose. As a student intern with the Northern California Innocence Project, April investigated post-conviction claims of innocence.
For her commitment to public service as a law student, April was awarded a Certificate in Public Interest and Social Justice, and a Pro Bono Award for 2006-2007. April also participated in the 2006 Geneva/Strasbourg Program in Public International Law and International Human Rights. In addition to public service, April was an Honors Moot Court, national competitor in the 2007 ABA Appellate Advocacy Competition in New York City. April finished as a Quarter-Finalist in the 2006 Galloway Criminal Moot Court Competition, and she was awarded Best Appellant Brief for Advocacy in 2006.
